Jake Kilrain
Cabinet Card. Jake Kilrain was a very tough and
durable fighter. He is best recognized for participating in the last
bare-knuckle world heavyweight championship fight in 1889 (under London rules)
where Kilrain and the great John Sullivan went 76 rounds. An Elmer Chickering
cabinet photo of Sullivan is available elsewhere in this auction. Kilrain's
coach, Mike Donovan, ended the fight by throwing in the towel, or sponge to be
historically accurate, much to Kilrain's protests. This is an eye catching
example with a virtually problem free obverse. The back has some damp staining.
