Benjamin F. Butler CDV semi profile view in uniform. Back marked I.I Prince, New Orleans. Butler
was made military governor of New Orleans (1862), but his harsh rule caused his
removal. Making this a rare back mark. He commanded (1864) the Union expedition
to seize Fort Fisher, N.C., but it failed, and he was removed from command. As
a U.S. representative from Massachusetts he favored the radical Republican
policy of reconstruction and led the
impeachment proceedings against Pres. Andrew Johnson.
