John Gibbon DS Appointment 16” X 9 ¾” October 13,1868, Fort Sanders, WT for a Sergeant in the 36th US Infantry. Also signed by William
Starring who co-authored the Lakota Indian Tribal dictionary- the first book
printed in Wyoming and the Dakotas. Beautiful large dark signature.
Gibbon was a noted commander of the Iron Brigade.
He was severely wounded at Fredericksburg. Gibbon’s division bore the brunt of
Pickett's Charge on July 3rd during the Battle of Gettysburg. Post-war Gibbon commanded the Yellowstone
expedition against Sitting Bull and fought Chief Joseph the following year
where he was wounded at Big Hole Pass. Gibbon's approach on June 26, 1876
probably saved the lives of the several hundred men under the command of Major Marcus Reno who were still under siege at the
battle of the Little Big Horn. Gibbon arrived the next day and helped to bury
the dead and evacuate the wounded.
