He initially joined the Washington Grays, later the 8th NY militia and rose to major of the famous 7th NY militia. He also served the 65th NY Vol. Inf. and the Army of the Potomac. He was in charge of the Confederate Prison on Johnson’s Island, but returned to the army to take part in the battle of the Wilderness, where he was captured. Ironically, he was now an inmate of a Confederate stockade for Union prisoners. Card rounded at the bottom. Back marked Bogardus, New York.
