Headquarters 12th in HV point look out MD
February 21, 1864
Lizzie, I have been busy all day. This
morning we were reviewed by major general Butler. He is spending the day on
the point. I have not seen a leisure moment since I came back. But I have been
well all the time. We have been having very cold weather. The coldest I have
seen on the point. The river has been frozen up- have not had a mail for
several days till today -it came a short time ago. A part of our regiment is
going home in a few days. I shall remain having been home so recently. I could
go if I wanted to, but suppose someone else can do as much as I can.
I should be glad to go, but someone must
stay to take care of the new ones. I think we shall have enough to do. If
father can sell my horse, I think he had better do it. I want him very much,
and if he is not sold, she’ll have him come out after town meeting. There will
be some risk and sending him by a stranger. Lo I think it better to sell him if
he can get $125 or even if he cannot get quite that. If he was here he would be
worth $175. Colonel Potter has put his in my care so I use him.
I want you to write as soon as you get
this what about the horse etc. Major Langley expects to go to New Hampshire
soon. Several of the officers are going too. I have rebuilt my quarters, since
I came back, have now the best in camp. I have not time to right now will write
again in a few days, and great haste I am A M Heath Adjutant
