Camp Chase POW Letter- with transmittal envelope- James M Buchanan 3rd Maryland Lt Artillery

March 11th 1864

Camp Chase Columbus, Ohio

Wife Ellen,

This seems to be our destination, as we have been here for two weeks and I am really sorry that we were not sent to Johnson's Island, where your Brother is but I may yet meet him before my exchange. I have written to my Brother in Balt (Baltimore) but have received no answer. He may be dead for what I know to the contrary. I may yet hear from him. Oh, how I long to hear from my dear Brother and Sister; the only one on Earth. I expect they are still in Europe. Since I have been here, I miss your ministering hand to my wants. They allow the Prisoners to receive goods from their relations and friends. And I may yet hear from some of mine. Do you know anyone in Balt.? If I so enquire, if my people are there. You can write to me at this place. Goodbye. Direct letters to James. M. Buchanan, Jr. 1st Lieut 3rd Battalion "Prisoner of War" Prison No. 2 ? No. 3

(The 3rd Artillery Company was organized at Richmond, Virginia, in January, 1862. Ordered to Knoxville, the unit served in Tennessee and Kentucky, then was assigned to A.W. Reynold's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. During the spring of 1863 a detachment served on board the Confederate gunboat Queen of the West and suffered many casualties. The remaining part of the battery was captured at Vicksburg. )
