Captain Melville C. Wilkinson 23rdNY, 107NY, VRC later Killed by Indians A seated view CDV of Wilkinson a man with lots of hair. His injury at Antietam forced him into the VRC. He was post-war Aid De Camp to O.O Howard who was President of Howard and Commissioner of the Freedman’s Bureau. Wilkinson taught military science for a year at Howard University and argued for the inclusion of Indians. He was present for the removal of the Modoc from Fort McPherson to Indian Territory and he participated in the Nez Perce War. He founded the Forrest Grove Indian School in Salem, Oregon. In 1898 he was killed in the battle of Sugar Point in Minnesota. A skirmish with a band of Chippawa. Ink signed on the verso "M.C. Wilkinson”. Back marked Griswold & Smith, Columbus, Ohio.
