12th Illinois Great sixth plate tintype of a Union soldier
wearing a rarely-seen tam-o-shanter cap. This unique headgear likely places him
in the 12th Illinois Infantry Regiment, which was comprised primarily of
soldiers of Scottish origin. The checkerboard tartan ribbon on his bonnet
matches almost exactly with that of the Regiment’s Colonel, John MacArthur. He
would have been present at battles such as Shiloh and the March to the Sea.
