General Peter Osterhaus CDV Osterhaus was major of a battalion in the 2nd Mo. infantry, with which he took part in the actions at Dug springs and Wilson's creek. He was then colonel of the 12th Mo. regiment, Dec. 19, 1861, and commanded a brigade under Gen. John C. Fremont, a division under Gen. Samuel R. Curtis at Pea ridge, in March, 1862. He became brigadier-general of volunteers, June 9, 1862, and commanded a division in the capture of Arkansas Post and subsequently in the Vicksburg campaign. He commanded the 1st division of the 15th corps of Grant's army in the operations at Chattanooga and at the battle of Missionary ridge, where he particularly distinguished himself. He acted as chief of staff to Gen. Canby at the surrender of Gen. E. Kirby Smith. Slight trim top and bottom. Orange 2 cent revenue stamp on the verso. No back mark.
