Brevet General Thomas T. Health 5thOhio Cavalry writes to General John E. Smith…beat up Hills scouts….I shall move immediately with my own command and try to find the enemy. 1P, Period pencil, 4to.

General,

No force of enemy on march down- Crossed Keith’s Ford this morning. Beat up Col Hill’s Scouts on road here. Found his camp at Thompson’s Ford, two miles from here. He heard of our coming and moved at 8 o’clock lst night taking off some prisoners and Col Fourtellotte’s horse captured on yesterday- I met no force here but one of my own men detailed at Allatoona. I learned that a Captain of”McCook’s Cavalry” and sixty men came out from Allatoona to within a mile and half of this place and halted and the captain told him he might come over here and come back soon as he was going back immediately- I therefore know nothing and expecting nothing from such allies. I shall move immediately with my own command and try to find the enemy. They are reported at "four or five hundred” but I do not think Col Hill’s Command will exceed two hundred.

Will make camp as soon as I can afford the time, don’t be alarm for our safety. Your Obt Servt Thomas T Heath Col 5thO.V.C.

To Gen John E. Smith
