Madam,
In
Response to yours of Feb 15th I have to say that it affords me great
pleasure to comply with your request, and I herewith return your card with my
signature and my present address and other matter that may interest you.
During
the war I was in command of a cavalry force at Port Hudson, near that place was
a mill owned and operated by a citizen from Brooklin named Noyes, near that
mill was a stockade manned by negro troops for the protection of the mill. On
Sunday morning May 15th 1864 that stockade was attacked by
Confederates and captured, among the prisoners taken was an old gentleman, also
from Brooklin, within a short distance was a picket post composed of my men. I
received information immediately and in a very short time was in pursuit with
my whole command. We soon overtook them, killed some, captured some and retook
the prisoners they had taken. Some time after I received a letter from a
Brooklin lady informing me that the old gentleman was her father and expressing
her gratitude to me. Your letter brings this incident to mind. I have lost the
ladies name and would be pleased to learn it, but probably never will. Very
Respectfully, John G. Fonda
