Japanese Woman CDV of a beautifully dressed woman standing by a reed screen with a plant in front of it. The woman’s clog-sandals are "geta” — their purpose was to elevate feet and kimono hems above mud and dust off the street. She holds up the hem of her outer kimono as if she is walking outside. Both men and women had their own versions of these. I suspect that the distinct configuration of the reed screen has some significance but that’s an aspect unknown to me. I’d say she is upper middle-class because of her two kimono (and under-kimono which we don’t see), her make-up, elaborate obi (sash) and hair ornaments. No back mark.
