Wealthy Woman CDV The rich kimono (the outer one having a heavily padded hem, ornate sash (obi), displayed fan, and elaborate hairstyle and ornaments, all indicate wealth and upper class. Heavy white make up on the face and eyebrows shaved or painted over, and though the parted lips, you can see her teeth have been stained black — all of these are the marks of an upper class, married woman - seated in a western-style chair. Now, the face poses a problem for us. It is either a very mannish woman or a man portraying a woman in a theatrical performance. The set of characters at the upper right (which also suggests theatre) might tell us more — if you can find someone to decipher them. Some wrinkling to the albumen.
