Daniel Sickles CDV and Signature with Rank as Major General, Sickles had a colorful Civil War career. Born in 1819, he was a New York politician before the war, infamous for killing Philip Barton Key II, son of Francis Scott Key, in 1859 over an affair with Sickles' wife. Acquitted using a temporary insanity defense, he joined the Union Army in 1861, raising the Excelsior Brigade. Commissioned a brigadier general, he fought in the Peninsula Campaign and at Antietam. Promoted to major general in 1862, he commanded the III Corps. At Chancellorsville, his corps struggled, but at Gettysburg in 1863, Sickles controversially repositioned his corps, exposing it to attack. This led to heavy losses and the amputation of his leg after a cannonball wound. Awarded the Medal of Honor in 1897, he claimed credit for helping win Gettysburg. Post-war, he served as a diplomat and advocated for veterans. Frame measures 5 7/8” X10”
