George Sykes CDV and War Date Signature, Sykes graduated from West Point in 1842 and served in the Mexican-American War, earning a brevet for gallantry at Cerro Gordo. A career officer, he fought in the Seminole Wars and on the frontier before the Civil War. When the war began, Sykes commanded Regular Army units, distinguishing himself at the First Battle of Bull Run (1861). Promoted to brigadier general, he led a division in the Peninsula Campaign and at Antietam (1862). In 1863, he took command of the V Corps, fighting at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg, his corps played a critical role in defending Little Round Top, helping secure the Union victory. However, his cautious leadership style led to his replacement after the Mine Run Campaign (1863). Reassigned to Kansas, he served in administrative roles.
