General G(abriel) R. Paul Clipped Signature "Very Truly Yours G. R. Paul” 2 7/8 X 1 1/4”. Gabriel René Paul, born in 1813 in St. Louis, Missouri, was a West Point graduate (1834) and career officer who served as a Union brigadier general during the Civil War. Starting the war as a major in the 8th U.S. Infantry, he was appointed colonel of the 4th New Mexico Volunteers at Fort Union, New Mexico, in 1861, where he helped repel Confederate forces. Promoted to brigadier general in 1862, Paul commanded a brigade in the I Corps, participating in the Battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, while leading his brigade at Oak Ridge, he was severely wounded by a bullet through his right temple, exiting his left eye, causing permanent blindness and impairing his hearing and smell. The injury ended his combat career. Despite his condition, Paul performed administrative duties until retiring in February 1865. He was brevetted brigadier general in the regular army for gallantry at Gettysburg and died in 1886, buried with honors at Arlington National Cemetery. A rare signature.
