UNION BVT GENERAL FRANKLIN D CALLENDER
CS with rank 3” X 1”
Birth: Feb. 27, 1817
Death: Dec. 13, 1882

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1839 graduate of the United States Military Academy and a Mexican War veteran, he was serving as a Major in the Ordnance Department at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was then assigned as commander of the United States Army Arsenal in St. Louis, Missouri, which was a strategically significant position due to the divided
loyalties that existed in Missouri, and for its location as a conduit for supplies to Union forces in the West. He was then given expanded duties as Chief of Ordnance for the entire Department of Missouri. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on April 9, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services in the Ordnance Department". He remained in the Army after the
conclusion of the conflict, and retired in 1870 with the rank of Colonel.
