Gen. John H. Martindale CS with rank. 3” x 1 1/2" Union general who graduated in 1835 from West Point but was so disappointed in not being posted to the Corps of Engineers that he resigned without serving with the troops. He went to law school and served as district
attorney. In 1861 he was commissioned brigadier general of volunteers and served throughout the Peninsular campaign and later as military governor of Washington, D.C. 1n 1864 he led a division of Smith’s XVIII Corps at Cold Harbor, Bermuda Hundred, and Petersburg. Traces of paper tape on verso.
