Ada Harland - CDV of a young Ada wearing an off the shoulder dress which highlights her necklace while pulled-up hair shows her ornate earrings. She is staring into the camera with a very innocent look. The CDV has a bit of a smudge next to her left ear and is backmarked Gurney of NY. Ada was "born in England, the daughter of a surgeon, actress Ada Harland (Ada S. Smith) became one of the finest burlesque artists of her day. She made her 1862 London debut in "Friends or Foes," then came to the U.S. with Lydia Thompson's company and became a star. In 1873 Harland married Brander Matthews, a theater scholar, and retired.”
