Lt. Colonel James Oscar Nixon First Louisiana Cavalry CDV. Nixon was captured by the
Federals at Big Hill, Kentucky on July 30, 1863. After spending time as a
POW at Johnson's Island, Nixon was released on his "parole of honor"
on December 19, 1864. Upon his release he lodged with his brother in
Cedarville, NJ. Nixon’s brother was U.S.
Rep. John T. Nixon, a Republican who represented New Jersey from 1859 to
1863.Lt.
Col. Nixon posed for this photograph in his Confederate uniform at the
photographic studios of J. Gurney & Son in New York City. On the
verso of the carte, Nixon inked this dedication to his young niece, Caroline
Elmer Nixon: "For Carrie Dear with the affectionate regards of Uncle
James N. Y. Feb. 20. 65". Nixon was the great uncle of President
Richard M. Nixon.
