Residence of Artist
Thomas Sully, Philadelphia Circa 1855 CDV showing the
residence of the Philadelphia artist. Sully tenanted the residence, which
included his living quarters, studio, and small exhibition gallery, from circa
1828 until his death. Includes the adjacent business of music publisher George
Blake, "Blake’s Music Store," at 13 South Fifth Street, (later 25
South Fifth Street). Blake, a long-time friend of Sully, operated from the
location from circa 1814-1871. Sheet music is displayed in the store window.
Also shows construction equipment in the foreground and a partial view of the
Artisans’ Building at Ranstead Place and Fourth Street in the background. The
building, built in 1848 by H. Coperthwait, was razed by fire in April 1856.
Lithographer P.S. Duval was a tenant of the building. No back mark.
