General Chauncey B. Reese A West Point graduate class of 1859, he was a Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers at the outbreak of the war. Appointed Captain Assistant Chief Engineer in August 1861, he rendered valuable service in the Virginia peninsular campaign constructing bridges, roads, and field-works. He participated in the battle of Gettysburg, the siege of Fort Wagner, South Carolina, and was promoted Lieutenant Colonel Chief Engineer, Army of Tennessee during the Atlanta campaign. For gallant and distinguished services during the campaigns in Georgia and the Carolinas, he was brevetted Brigadier General U.S. Army on March 13, 1865. In June, 1865, he served as AIG on the staff of General Logan and was superintending engineer of the construction of Fort Montgomery, New York.
