Gen. William Selby Harney joined the regular army in 1818 and distinguished himself against the Indians in Florida. He fought in the Mexican war, relieved of command by Scott and restored by President Polk, his neighbor in Tennessee. After the war, Harney did regular service in the northwest. He was in command of the Dept. of the West at the outset of the Civil War. He was relieved of command and later retired in 1863 because of his speculated pro southern sympathies.
